Even though this blog is fairly new, I have been blogging for over 10 years. However, it wasn’t until recently that I decided to blog full time. It might seem overwhelming to start your own blog. You might think “where do I even start?”, which is why I wanted to share my tips on how to start your own self-hosted WordPress blog!
1. Decide On What You Want To Blog About
This should be the easiest part! You know you want to start a blog so you should already have an idea of what you want to blog about. You can start a niche blog like fashion or beauty or you can start a blog about your everyday life. There’s no rules to what you can blog about since this is your blog.
2. Decide On A Name
Deciding on a name is the hardest part (at least for me). There are so many blogs/websites out there that the name you’d like might already be taken so be sure to do your research. Once you decide on a name, you might want to check social media websites to see if that username is taken as well (i.e. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc). Once everything checks out, it is time to purchase your domain. I personally use Namecheap to buy all my domains and they always have coupons! Personally, I’d try to stick with a .com domain versus any of the others.
3. Purchase Hosting
After you’ve purchased your domain name, you’re going to need a place to host it. I have been using HostGator for years and they are great! They have many hosting plans to choose from and they even have WordPress hosting. Personally, I’ve just used the regular web hosting and found that that is fine (you don’t need to pay extra for the WordPress hosting – unless you’d like to). After you purchase your hosting and update your name servers, you’re ready to install WordPress!
4. Install WordPress
If you went with HostGator, you can install WordPress from your cPanel which makes it quick and easy. Once you’ve installed WordPress, you can start customizing it to your liking.
5. Make It Your Own
Choosing a theme for your blog is the fun part! There are a lot of free and paid themes out there that you can choose from. You can go with a framework like Genesis and purchase child themes from Hello You Designs or Restored 316. If you want something more personal, there are a lot designers who create custom themes for you. If you’re looking for an affordable custom design, check out my design site Emi Creates!
6. Start Blogging
After all that, you are finally ready to start blogging! Blogging can be really fun and a great outlet for you. I really hope you enjoy your new blog. If you are trying to learn how to start your own blog, I hope this helped you!
